| | Junior Cycle C.S.P.E | Curriculum Content The CSPE curriculum is divided into the following main concepts
Rights and Responsibilities Every human being is entitled to basic human rights. These rights are of a civic, cultural, economic and political nature. You should know about these rights and the need for us to safeguard these rights. This also implies the responsibilities we have towards ourselves and others.
Human dignity Individuals have the right to live their lives with dignity and be treated with respect. If they are
Stewardship We are temporary owners of planet earth. It is important that we look after our planet for future generations. We must act responsibly in caring for our environment.
Democracy Democracy is a form of government where citizens elect people to represent them. It is for the people by the people. Ireland is a democratic country
Law Rules are laws are necessary if the rights of individuals are to be protected and promoted. You should have an awareness of why we have laws, how they are upheld and what happens when an individual breaks the law.
Development Local, national and international communities are in a constant state of change. These changes can have profound effects on individuals and communities at all levels. Development is usually positive, but sometimes it can have negative effects.
Interdependence We are all connected or linked in some way at individual, local, national and global levels. The food we eat, the clothes we wear all link us to other people.
Approaches And Methodologies The main approach in CSPE is active learning that engages students physically, emotionally and cognitively. Structured discussion has a key role in CSPE where students can discuss ideas and feelings. Simulation games and role-play that involves careful preparation allows students to play out experiences and life situations in a safe environment. Debates are often key to many concepts in CSPE. This develops perspective-taking skills and helps to develop and share opinions. Other approaches include project or artwork, text work, word searches etc.

The CSPE class of 2H, Second Year, are doing an action project regarding animal rights and ways that could help to minimize violations of these rights. This project is part of the CSPE coursework which is required to be submitted in our Junior Certificate year and will finish with each of us having a written Project Report ready for next year.
There are four parts to our project: fund-raising, donation, carrying out of an action and finally, publishing a Project Report. |
| Our class is divided into eight committees and each one has been given the responsibility of a particular area / aspect of the project to be completed.
The committees and their respective jobs are as follows:
• Internal PR (communication with the public, etc) • Liaison (Interaction with the DSPCA, arrangement of meetings, etc) • Financial (dealing with money from fund-raising activity, etc) • Welcoming (to receive members from DSPCA when they visit the school) • Website (responsible for creating a page on the school website, on this project) • Bake Sale (Organization of Fund-raising Event 1) • Jellybean (Organization of Fund-raising Event 2) • Name the Teacher Competition (Organization of Fund-raising Event 3)
During the initial stages of our project, our class agreed upon the three fund-raising events mentioned above, namely Bake Sale, Jelly Bean Competition and Name the Teacher Competition.
Lastly, news has arrived from the DSPCA that certain members from this organization will be visiting our school on 10th March, 2010 to raise awareness among our fellow classmates regarding the cause of our project. Here, the above mentioned member(s) will be presented with a cheque, which shall contain all funds raised from the three events that will have been conducted by then.
Announcements regarding special days and the basics of our project shall be made at assemblies on Wednesdays and posters have been displayed around the school. We would sincerely request everyone to spend a few minutes on them.
